The Kite Museum is one of the two museums housed in Sanskar Kendra, a cultural centre located in Paldi, Ahmedabad. Also known as the Patang Museum in Gujarati, the museum is a permanent exhibition of kites from the private collection of Mr. Bhanu Shah, donated by him to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in 1984. The structure of the Sanskar Kendra was designed and built by the renowned architect Le Corbusier in 1954 as a part of a larger development project that currently includes the Kite Museum and the Sanskar Kendra City Museum.

The Kite museum is a first of its kind museum that exhibits more than a 100 kites made from a variety of materials and designs. There are special thematic and festival based displays including kites crafted with sequences of mirror work, Garba dances and block prints. Hexagonal Japanese kites called Rokoku, made of 400 pieces of paper, and kites with miniature paintings of the Hindu god Krishna and his consort Radha, are some of the most attractive exhibits.

The museum also displays the history of kites starting from 200 BC when Hiuen Tsang flew a kite at night to leave the army of Liu Pang of Han dynasty in China to 1752, Benjamin Franklin showed to the world how lightning was electricity by flying a kite through a thunderstorm. Then finally, in 1902, kite flying eventually led to the Wright brothers developing the airplane and the advent of modern kites.

All kites are displayed on vertical panels, with tails pointing downwards, behind clear glass, lit by overhead track lighting. Information panels containing black and white images, text and signage are displayed vertically at the end of the display rows.
