The Jawaharlal Nehru Van Udyan, located at the foothills of the Pandav Leni caves, was inaugurated on December 27, 2016 by the Mahashtrian actor Nana Patekar and the chief of the political party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Raj Thackeray. Its development is overseen by the Forest Development Corporation in collaboration with the Nashik Municipal Corporation, and the Tata Trust. The forest garden is spread across an area of 93 acres.
The 40-ft tall entrance gate of the garden has become a landmark feature. Located on the main road connecting Mumbai and Nashik, it is designed in the shape of a butterfly and dotted with a trail of electric lights to draw the attention of travelers along this route. The seating arrangement too is also laid out in the shape of a butterfly. Giant animatronic replicas of elephants and other animals serve as life-size interactive models attracting children and encouraging a hands-on, immersive experience. Bicycles are available for people to wander around the three kilometer cycle track. It is not only a recreational and a study center, but also one that attracts tourists. At present, the forest nursery houses many herbal plants and varieties of trees such as agave, palms, asoka, mango, banana, guava, tamarind and many more. Flowers housed here include rose, lily, periwinkle, hibiscus, and silver fern, among others.
Through Tata Trusts, the Jawaharlal Nehru Van Udyan has featured Asia's largest live 'sound & light' laser show, Katha, in Marathi, to impress upon children and other visitors the importance of conserving forests. The live show, retrofitted in the existing amphitheater against a background of dense forest and electronically lit trees and the sounds of birds, conveys the message of conservation in a manner that is simultaneously entertaining and edifying.
