Pukhraj Durry Udhyog is an active working space that displays the practice of durry or rug making. With a verbal history of almost 700 years, communities of Salawas, Rajasthan have been making rugs for almost 7 generations. Established in 1980, Pukhraj Durry Udhyog is now supporting more than 50 families by setting up looms while simultaneously providing the opportunity of experiencing the process of durry making for its visitors. The artisans have been practising traditional techniques of preparing the yarn, dyeing with natural colours to weaving. Along with this, they have also adopted modern materials, and dying methods to prepare rugs. The establishment is located at Mr. Pukhraj’s home, which has been in use for the past 150 years.

The establishment displays loom actively being used by the artisans. In their regional language, the loom is called adda, the comb used to fix intersection weaving is called kango and the stick used for spacing is called khapta. Cotton yarn, sheep wool, camel wool, and jute are used as raw materials to prepare the rugs. The Pukhraj Durry Udhyog is a good pathway for one to go through history, observe the cultural practices, people, communities of the region of Rajasthan.
